Slow start costs Trojans against Henderson County

By CHARLIE HUST
A very slow start for the WCHS Trojans proved to be costly in a 56-46 loss to Henderson County last Friday night in Colonel gym. It was the first meeting between the two arch-rivals.
Henderson (13-6) sprinted out to a 15-4 lead behind the hot shooting of David Simmons and never trailed in the contest. He scored 18 of his game-high 25 points in the first half.
Webster fell behind 19-4 to begin the second quarter before mounting a rally to close the gap to 26-15 at intermission. The Trojans managed just two free throws in the entire first half and were ice-cold from behind the 3-point arc, hitting just 1-of-8 attempts.
Max McMain was the only Trojan in double figures, finishing with 23 points including WC’s only 3-pointers. He had a trio of 3’s.
“They (Henderson) did what they wanted to do and forced us to do things we didn’t want to do on offense,” stated WCHS head coach Jon Newton. “Our offense just didn’t attack the basket.”
The Trojans out-scored Henderson 15-13 in the third quarter thanks to a hot streak from McMain. The Colonels closed out the game with a 17-16 scoring advantage.
J. D. Newton added eight points and a team-high nine rebounds followed by six points from Zac Shoulders. Mason Roland, who played the entire game despite running a fever, finished with seven points. Ben Brumfiel completed the WCHS scoring with two points.
Henderson owned a strong 34-24 rebounding edge and drained seven 3-pointers in the victory, three coming from Brady Norman in the second half.
Webster (15-7) is back in action Friday night traveling to arch-rival Union County in Morganfield. WCHS will host Lyon County next Monday in Dixon.
