Lady Trojans trounce Lyon County

By CHARLIE HUST
The WCHS Lady Trojans picked up a victory last Friday, splitting a doubleheader with Lyon County. Earlier in the week, Hopkinsville avenged an early-season loss to WCHS with a 5-3 victory.
The Lady Trojans are back in action Thursday hosting Region 2 favorite Henderson County. WCHS travels to Dawson Springs on Friday and then back on the road Saturday, participating in a round-robin event at Muhlenberg County.

Hopkinsville           5
An outstanding pitching performance from senior Bailey Townsend was squandered last Tuesday night as the Lady Tigers earned a bit of revenge in frigid temperatures at Lady Trojan Field. WCHS had drilled Hopkinsville 12-1 in the season-opener in March.
Townsend had handcuffed the Lady Tigers for five innings, firing a no-hitter and enjoying a 3-0 lead. But some sloppy defensive play in the sixth inning by Webster opened the door for the Hoptown squad for a five-run rally. That was the decisive inning of the game as WCHS committed three costly errors, combined with four Lady Tiger hits, the only hits of the game for the visitors.
Webster took an early 2-0 lead in the contest, scoring twice in its first at-bat as lead-off hitter Christian Papineau smacked a shot into the gap and circled the bases for a inside-the-park home run. Kelsey Mays followed one out later with a single and scored on a two-out double from Georgia Keeney.
Webster added a single run in the bottom of the fifth for a 3-0 lead courtesy of a Hopkinsville error on a grounder hit by Kayleigh Wood and an RBI-double from Papineau.
That lead stood until the top of the sixth when Hopkinsville fashioned its game-winning rally. Back-to-back fielding miscues put runners at the corners for HHS. Townsend fanned the next hitter but another Webster error allowed one run to score. Townsend then struck out Jenna Smithson for the second out of the inning. But four consecutive singles from the Lady Tigers did the damage for a 5-3 lead.
Georgia Keeney led the Lady Trojans at the plate, going 3-for-3. Papineau was 2-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI. Madison Townsend, Jerrica Jones and Kelsey Mays all had one hit each. Rylee Warford had two stolen bases, followed by one theft each from Macye Davis and Madison Townsend.

Lyon County          5
Lyon pitching ace Whitney Bingham limited the Lady Trojans to just five hits and the Lady Lyons took advantage of a season-high seven errors from Webster to capture the first game of Friday’s doubleheader.
WC senior hurler Bailey Townsend tossed a very good game as well, allowing no earned runs on just four hits.
A pair of Webster fielding miscues in the bottom of the first opened the door to three runs as LCHS took a quick 3-0 lead.
Another error and a two-out, RBI-triple from Emily Klueppel pushed the lead to 4-0 in the third.
Webster made a game of it in the top of the fourth with their only runs of the game. Jerrica Jones was hit by a pitch, followed by a one-out walk to Macye Davis. Georgia Keeney jumped aboard on a two-base throwing error from Lyon, allowing Jones and Davis to score. Keeney then scored on a RBI-single from Bailey Townsend.
But that would be all the offense the Lady Trojans could muster. Madison Townsend led WCHS with two singles, while Georgia Keeney, Kristin Jones and Bailey Townsend had one single apiece.

Lyon County        5
WCHS got the bats going in Friday’s nightcap, pounding out 11 hits. Georgia Keeney kept a hot stick with a 3-for-4 night at the plate and a season-high five RBI. Kelsey Mays was 3-for-3 with three runs scored.
A three-run rally in the first game WCHS the early momentum. One out single from Jerrica Jones and Mays followed by a two-out single from Georgia Keeney gave WC a 2-0 lead. Keeney scored on a single from Madison Townsend to make 3-0.
Lyon County got a single run in the first and tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the second. Three errors by Webster in the bottom of the third surrender a single run and 4-3 LCHS lead. Lyon stretched the lead to 5-3 in the fifth but then Lady Trojans bats took over the rest of the way.
After a walk to Mays and a single from Davis to open the sixth inning, Keeney blasted a triple to plate both runners and tie the game at 5-5.
The Lady Trojans then grabbed the victory with a three-run rally in their final at-bat. Christian Papineau reached on a error, followed by back-to-back singles from Jerrica Jones and Mays, allowing Papineau to score. Keeney then stroked a one-out single to give Webster a 7-5 advantage. Jones scored later in the inning on a passed ball.
Kayleigh Wood picked up the pitching victory, allowing just one earned run on five hits.
Lady Trojan jayvee
dominate tourney
WCHS fans got a glimpse of great things to come in the future on Saturday as the Lady Trojan junior varsity squad reeled off three straight wins to capture the McLean County Invitational.
Kayleigh Wood control Breckinridge County in the opener, allowing just one earned run on seven hits while striking eight in the 9-5 win.
Trailing 2-0, Webster cut the lead in half in the second on an RBI-grounder from Karlie Keeney that scored Kaci Wood. WC then took control of the game with a five-run rally in the third. Kerstin Braden reached on a error followed by a bunt single from Alison Knight. Two more Breck errors allowed Jerrica Jones and Kayleigh Wood aboard. Kaci Wood then ripped a triple to bring home two more runs. A sacrifice fly from Kari Wood pushed the WC lead to 6-2.
Webster picked up its final runs in the fourth on a double from Mays and singles from Kayleigh Wood and Kaci Wood.
Kaci Wood led the WC offense going 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Knight added two single while Rylee Warford, Kayleigh Wood, Jerrica Jones and Kelsey Mays all had one hit.
• Three runs in the first inning was all Webster needed in a 3-1 over Hopkins County Central in Saturday’s second game at McLean County.
Grace Scott fired a no-hitter, allowing two walks and along with a WC fielding error in the bottom of the third for Central’s only run of the game.
Webster went to work quickly at the plate as Knight opened the game with a single, followed by consecutive walks to Mays and Jones. Run-scoring singles from Kayleigh Wood and Kari Wood, plus a passed ball with the bases loaded gave WCHS a 3-0 lead.
Mays and Kayleigh Wood stroked two hits each, including a double apiece, in the victory while Knight and Kari Wood added one single apiece.
• The young Lady Trojans pounded out 11 hits en route to an easy 14-5 win over host McLean County in the third game of the day.
Kelsey Mays led the charge smacking four doubles with four RBI. Jerrica Jones added a double, single and two RBI while Kayleigh Wood and Kaci Wood both chipped in with a double and two ribbis.
Alison Knight, Kerstin Braden and Karlie Keeney stroked one hit each. Hadlee Carter scored three runs in the game while Rylee Warford scored twice. Keeney picked up the pitching victory, allowing four earned runs on six hits.
WCHS freshmen
sweep Henderson
Seventh grade pitching standout Karlie Keeney recorded pitching win over a tough Henderson squad last Thursday in Dixon to lead the Lady Trojans to a doubleheader sweep.
Keeney dominated the Lady Colonels bats firing a two-hitter in the first game for the 4-1 win.
Henderson picked up it only run in the fourth thanks to three WCHS errors.
But the Lady Trojans took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame with a four-run rally, courtesy of four Henderson fielding miscues. Consecutive singles from Knight and Braden to open the frame put pressure on the Henderson defense and it folded, committing four errors to give WCHS a 4-1 lead to set the final score.
Sydney Lewis had the only other hit for Webster.
Webster’s Grace Scott earned the second win of the day from the mound for the Lady Trojans in Thursday second game, tossing a three-hitter while striking out four in the 10-5 win.
Madison Durbin led the Lady Trojans at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI-triple. Grace Scott also added a three-bagger while Alison Knight stroked a double. Savannah Jones, Kari Wood, and Lexi Hinton all had hits in the victory.
