Webster County boys’ cross country team rolled into a tradition-rich, cross country city on Saturday and came away with the top prize, winning the Owensboro Cross Country Invitational held at Yellow Creek Park.
It’s was the first invitational win of the season for the Trojans and the second individual title for Trevor Cole.

The talented junior zipped past the 11-team field with ease, claiming the top spot in 17:18. Behind Cole were four of his teammates all in the top 10.
“This was a great win for us, we dropped a full minute in our team average time from two weeks ago when we ran the Kentucky-Indiana Border Clash,” explained WCHS head coach Todd Whitsell. “Trevor has been very solid the last races and Mitchael has also been running very well.”
Mitchael Shelton was second, right on Cole’s heels with a 17:33. At the two mile mark, Shelton actually held the lead in front of Cole.
“This was a real confidence booster from Mitchael,” said Whitsell.
Preston Glazebrook was fifth overall (18:04), followed by Ronin Periard (18:19) in sixth place and newcomer Cole Hazelwood in 10th (18:35).
“Ronin and Preston continue to improve and run extremely hard for us. They both have a determination to just get better and faster everyday,” the WCHS coach stated. “Cole and Robert Daugherty are coming on strong as well. Cole has been a great addition to our squad in his first season. He has become a leader in practice, pushing Trevor everyday and working hard at all times.
“Robert is picking up his pace and looking to put down some solid times for his senior season. Everyone on this team is coming together and the way we’re running this early in the season, great things should be in our future,” Whitsell concluded.
Daugherty, Webster’s only senior, was 14th overall in 18:55. Hunter Hackney was 46th (21:01, Reece Clayton 49th (21:12), Spencer McCormick 62nd (21:58), Joe Chancellor 97th (25:32), Gilberto Joaquin 105th (26:35), Aaron White 107th (27:39) and Austin Morris 111th (29:06).
