Webster County’s first district football game of the season Friday night was much like the weather ... cold and soggy.
The Trojans ran into a strong Trigg County squad that used a stingy defense and high-powered offense to roll to a convincing 38-6 victory. The loss dropped WCHS to 1-6 while Trigg improved to 4-3.
A steady rain pounded the Cadiz area, both team struggled on their first possessions of the game. The Wildcats found pay dirt first, scoring on a 26-yard touchdown pass to Debo Mayes from quarterback Tyreke Wilson with 3:31 left in the first quarter.
The Trojans showed some fire on their next possession, traveling 66 yards on nine plays with the highlight being a 43-yard pass reception by Clayton Oliver at the Trigg 4-yard line. One play later, junior quarterback Dillon Baty powered his way into the end zone for the only WCHS touchdown of the night. That tied the score at 6-6 with 7:53 remaining in the second quarter.
From that point on, the Wildcat defense was just too much for Webster to overcome. TCHS limited the Trojans to just 91 total yards in the first half while registering five quarterback sacks of Baty. TC finished with a season-high 11 sacks in the contest, allowing Baty virtually no time to spot a receiver and keep the Trojans in their offensive set. WC also had one interception and two fumbles on the very wet field.
Webster finished the game with 183 total yards, 70 on the ground and 113 via the air on 8-of-19 attempts by Baty. Trigg’s potent running game combined for 295 rushing yards and 135 through the air for a season-high 430 total yards.
The Wildcats took the lead for good after WC’s touchdown, on a 9-yard touchdown pass to Micah Gordon. A two-point conversion run by Skylar Pool pushed the lead to 14-8 with 5:57 left in the first half. Trigg stretched the lead to 21-6 with :41 before halftime on a 6-yard TD run Wilson.
A 23-yard field goal by Reagan Hyde made it 24-6 at the 7:42 mark of the third quarter. A Webster County interception opened the door for another Trigg County score with 6:03 left in the period. Colton Livingston capped off the drive with a 4-yard run to make it 31-6.
Trigg’s final score came in the fourth quarter on an 61-yard touchdown run from Skylar Pool with 7:43 left in the game.
Webster junior Dylan Rich had a strong game at running back, finishing with a team-high 68 yards on 13 carries. Chance Cook added 14 yards on 10 totes. Oliver’s one catch for 43 yards was tops on the team while Jamon Warren had 36 yards on three receptions and fellow senior Chance Cook 32 yards on two catches.
Webster goes on the road Friday night for another tough district matchup, taking on Fort Campbell.
