The much-improved Webster County volleyball squad slammed McLean County on Tuesday night for its first varsity win of the season.
Led by 13 ‘kills’ from Darrian McNary and 12 from Christian Papineau, the Lady Trojans took 3-of-5 sets from the visiting Lady Cougars.
After jumping out to a 17-13 lead in the first set, Webster saw the McLean squad come back and take a 20-18 advantage. But the Lady Trojans rallied behind two service aces from Hannah Heady and earned the thrilling 25-23 victory.
Webster claimed the second set 25-22 but fell in the third by the same score. McLean evened the match with a 25-17 victory in the fourth set, setting up the deciding fifth and final round. That’s were the WCHS squad took the early lead and never trailed in the 15-13 victory.
On the night, McNary had 13 kills and four blocks while Papineau added 12 kills and four blocks. Heady led both squads with 12 assists and five service aces. Kristen Keeney add four blocks in the five-game match.
In jayvee action, McLean County prevailed in a pair of hard-fought sets 21-17 and 21-18. Georgia Keeney had five kills in the action while Christian Papineau added four kills, two aces and two blocks.
The Webster freshman squad set the tone for a winning night, spiking the Lady Cougars 23-21 and 21-12 in the opening matches. Royleigha Conley led the charge with five aces.
