A free tennis clinic for kids will be offered at Providence Municipal Golf & Recreation Center this summer, according to facility general manager Jon Garrett
The clinic will be divided into two age divisions and split over two consecutive Saturdays. Kids 8-12 are invited to come out to the newly-renovated courts on Saturday, June 14 from 8:30-10:30 a.m. On Saturday, June 21 from 8:30-10:30 a.m., the clinic will be open for kids 13-18.
“We are calling the camp ‘Teaching Tennis’,” said Garrett. “Our objective is to spark some interest in those that have never played and to build on the skill set of those who have.”
Several instructors will be on hand both days to work with the campers. Along with Garrett, Webster County High School tennis coach Mary Schalk, Danny Key, Morgan Johnson, and Marshall Garrett will be working with the campers in both an individual and group setting
“We are very fortunate to have some high level players volunteering their time,” said Garrett. “Coach Schalk is working hard to build the tennis program at the high school, and that genuinely excites me. I have pledged my support to help her in anyway possible. Hopefully this clinic will be a springboard to growing her program.”
Coach Schalk played collegiately at Lindsey Wilson College. Johnson and Marshall Garrett are both former members of the Henderson County tennis team and both were key players for teams that won multiple regional titles as well a second place finish in sectional play. Johnson went on to play at Murray State.
Danny Key has been one of the premiere tennis player in this area for years and has volunteered countless hours to working with kids and teaching the game.
“Danny is one of those guys that seems to get better with age,” said Garrett. “He loves the game and loves teaching it to others.”
Each camper will be given a t-shirt for taking part. The clinic has been sponsored by the Providence Tourism Commission.
