Drury to coach WCHS volleyball

By CHARLIE HUST
Webster County High School has hired Carolyn Drury as the next head volleyball coach. She will be replacing Bradley Brown who has been hired as a assistant football coach for the upcoming season.

Drury moved to Providence 17 years ago with her husband David.  She has three children, Trey, a student at Brescia University; Brooklyn, a junior at WCHS; and Carlee a fourth grader at Providence Elementary.  She is a 1986 graduate of Graves County High School and has been involved in sports all her life.
She was employed as an instructional assistant at Providence Elementary this past year and the previous two years prior she was an instructional assistant through the AmeriCorps Program. While serving as a volunteer in this program, Coach Drury became involved with the volleyball team where she has served as a volunteer assistant for the past three years.
Coach Drury is also an active member of Victory Baptist Church in Providence where she serves as  pianist and youth worker.
“Coach Drury coached this winter in the AVA league and has attended several clinics to improve her coaching skills.  She is currently a student at Madisonville Community College, where she is studying Middle School Education and plans to teach Math and Science,” according to WCHS athletic director Matt Bell.
Drury noted she is very excited about the direction of the Lady Trojan program after the varsity squad earned its first victory in school history last season, while the freshman and junior varsity squads posted several wins as well.
“I’m really excited about the upcoming season.  We have five experienced seniors returning along with several juniors with (varsity) experience to fill in the holes. They are all eager to do well and win matches.  I was encouraged for next season because we had 10 to 14 new players in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades come and work with us during preseason conditioning,” the newly-hired coach stated. “We participated in three preseason camps and gain some experience and hit some balls.  We all learned a few things!”
Drury also emphasized that it’s definitely not too late for interested young ladies to join the squad.
“As we come into practice July 15,  the team will see some changes and some new faces.  We will have one more open gym session on the July 14, followed by a mandatory parent meeting,” she stated.  “The volleyball season will officially start July 15 with practice from 1- 3 p.m. Anyone interested in playing volleyball please attend this session and have your parents attend the parent meeting on July 14. Open gym runs from 3-5 p.m., with parent meeting to start about 5:15.  Any girl entering grades 7-12 is welcome to come check out our practice and join our team.”
