It was a fitting conclusion to one of the best seasons ever for the Webster County Lady Trojan golf program.
WCHS finished seventh in the annual Regional Golf Championship held Tuesday at Madisonville Community Golf Course. Webster finished the day with a team total of 422. It was the best finish ever for a Webster County girls’ golf team.Leading the way was junior Cassidy Thomas with an 86. One stroke less would have played her in a tie with Muhlenberg County’s Breanna Shoemaker for the fourth and final qualifying spot to earn a trip to the KHSAA State Finals next week in Bowling Green. Thomas’ 86 was good enough for a tie for 11th place.
Ashley Henry, just a sophomore, carded an 104 to give Webster it’s second best score in the regional.
Webster County senior Macye Davis proved to be the story of the tourney, playing her round despite the fact that she was in a automobile accident on Sept. 13 and sustained two broken bones in her right foot. Under restrictions by her doctor, Davis was allowed to play in the regional tourney as long as she wore a walking boot and was able to ride a cart in between holes.
But riding a cart is prohibited by the KHSAA unless granted a special waiver by the KHSAA. Webster was approved the waiver for her to use the golf cart and she concluded the round with a 110, her first match since the accident.
"It certainly was a tough round for her. She’s so competitive and not being at her best was very, very frustrating," noted WCHS head coach Kyle Overby. "But I’m very proud of Macye and all the girls for a great effort not only in the regional but throughout the season. They’ve come a long way and showed much improvement."
Elizabeth Waller concluded the Lady Trojans’ scoring with a 122.
