Middle School Trojan football program finish season 6-2

by CHARLIE HUST
Webster County football fans will welcome the news from the middle school ranks. The young Trojan eighth grade team just completed one of its most successful season, reeling off six straight victories to finish with a very impressive 6-2 record under the direction of head coach Jacob Knight. It was the best mark a WC middle school squad had posted since 2006.
After topping Trigg County Middle School 36-14 in the annual Trojan Bowl behind two touchdown passes from quarterback Drew Skinner, one each to Branen Lamey and Clayton Oliver. Valik Bellis also had a rushing TD in the victory.

Two weeks ago, the Trojans dominated Browning Springs of Madisonville 44-0.
Skinner again displayed a strong arm, firing scoring strikes to Lamey and Oliver. Skinner and Lamey also had rushing touchdowns. The WC defense was very stingy behind the sparkling play of Tye Jaggers, Clayton Oliver and Blake Cowan.
The Webster seventh grade squad also earned a victory, pulling out a 12-6 overtime thriller against Browning Springs.
Last Thursday, the red-hot Trojans completed its second and its six-game win streak with another shutout, blanking McLean County 20-0.
A strong offensive line surge opened the door for WC’s first touchdown, a 21-yard run from Bellis in the second quarter.
Webster added to its lead in the third quarter on a 57-yard scoring drive, capped off by a 4-yard TD run from Oliver. A Skinner to Oliver pass play covering 32 yards set up the touchdown, leading to a 12-0 lead.
Drew Skinner’s 27-yard scamper on a quarterback keeper set up WC’s final score of the night. Bellis finished off the drive with a 2-yard run for the 20-0 score.
"We had some key players step up on defense in order to earn our second straight shutout," noted head coach Jacob Knight. "Tye Jaggers, Keegan Blake and Blake Cowan all had big stops against the Cougars."
Clayton Oliver also had an interception late in the fourth quarter to kill a McLean scoring threat. The Cougars had moved to the WC 27-yard line before Oliver leaped in front of a Cougar receiver for the ‘pick’ to preserve the shutout.

For the season, Webster averaged 27 points per game while holding its opponents to just 13 per contest.
