Webster County shutdown by Trigg County

By CHARLIE HUST
Trigg County used its superior speed and quickness to dominate Webster County Friday night 49-0 in football action at Trojan Field.
It was the first district victory for the Wildcats (3-3) while the Trojans suffered their sixth straight loss, falling to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in district play.
Trigg amassed almost 500 total yards in the blowout, scoring 32 points in the first half. And it came for all directions, including touchdown passes from veteran quarterback Luke McKenzie and three touchdowns runs from lightning-quick running back Jayven Jones. He led the TCHS rushing attack with 149 yards on just 10 carries, all in the first half. The Wildcats also had two punt returns that went for touchdowns, one in each half.

Webster’s lone bright spot was the kickoff return ability of senior Peyton Bussell. On three separate runs, Bussell gave the Trojans excellent field position with strong returns. He finished the game with 102 return yards, but the Trojan offense just couldn’t capture the momentum and put the ball in the end zone.
WCHS sophomore quarterback Dillon Baty led the Trojan offense with 60 passing yards on 8-of-16 attempts. His favorite target on the evening was Jamon Warren who caught two passes for 44 yards. Bussell added three receptions for 21 yards while Zach Bruce, who also shared quarterback duties, added three catches for 33 yards along with a team-leading 29 yards in rushing.
Webster played without the services of junior halfback Tre’ Wright who was injured in the final minutes of the contest against Hart County.
Trigg set the tone for the victory on its first possession, covering 76 yards on 12 plays for the 6-0 lead with 8:09 left in the first quarter. The Wildcats went up 13-0 with a touchdown from Jones on its second possession.
The Trojans were not shaken by the scoring drives as they put together a strong march of their own on their second possession. A 32-yard pass from Baty to Warren on a fourth-and-four sparked the drive, pushing the ball to the Trigg County 25-yard line. Another fourth down call from Coach Scotty Vance pushed the ball to the 5-yard line as Baty hooked up with Zach Bruce. But the Wildcat defense stood strong, pushing the Trojans back to the 11 and then holding two plays on fourth down to regain possession.
Jones then galloped 91-yards on the first play of the second quarter after the strong defensive stand, pushing the lead to 20-0. Another touchdown run from Jones made it 27-0 and a 60-yard punt return from Isaiah Bradford sent the halftime score at 32-0.
The Trojans will face another tough squad this Friday, hosting Fort Campbell for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Trojan Field.
