McMain scores 18 in Trojan win over Hopkins Central

By CHARLIE HUST
Webster County junior Max McMain scored a game-high 18 points as the Trojans continued their hot streak improving to 9-4 last Saturday with a 20-point victory over Hopkins County Central 62-42.
Webster raced out to a commanding 11-2 advantage in the opening minutes of the contest at Trojan gym. A pair of 3-point bombs from Zac Shoulders gave the Trojans a 16-4 advantage and the lead grew to 13 points before the Storm trimmed the lead to 19-9 at end of the first break. Shoulders finished the game with 10 points while Mason Roland was also in double figures with 13.
Central (1-8) cut the lead to 27-21 on a old-fashioned three-point play from Tyrek White midway through the second quarter. But Webster answered with six consecutive free throws, two each from Roland, McMain and J. D. Newton, to make it 33-21 at halftime.
Webster put the game out of reach to close out the third quarter thanks to a 12-2 run. McMain had five straight points in the outburst, converting two fastbreak layups plus a free throw giving the Trojans a 42-27 lead.
Newton added eight points in the win while Madison Melton, Jon Stubblefield, Colten Durrance and Cole Hazelwood added two points each.
Webster will host arch-rival Union County Friday night in Dixon in the second game of a boy/girl doubleheader. The Trojans travel to Crittenden County next Tuesday.
