Webster County’s football program will go on the search again for a new head football coach, following the resignation of Scotty Vance last week.
The veteran football and baseball coach announced he will be stepping down from the program after two years as the head coach and posting a 2-19 record. He will remain at WCHS as a teacher.
“It was a tough decision and I certainly didn’t want to leave the kids but I felt it was time to step away and it (decision) was the best one to make right now.”
WCHS athletic director Matt Bell stated that the search for a new coach is underway and is hopeful to have a replacement by the end of the school year. He noted that current assistant coaches will take over Vance’s off-season duties.
Despite the record, with both victories coming in the season-opener against Hopkins County Central, Vance was proud of many accomplishments in the Trojan football program. He added that many positives were achieved in the past two seasons.
“On paper, the wins and losses won’t tell all that we’ve done. The number of kids in the program grew in the past two years and those kids really had a positive attitude about football at WCHS,” Vance stated. “We also held kids accountable and that’s a huge positive in anything that you do in life.”
The long-time head coach said he had already received inquiries about future coaching positions in both football and baseball.
“I’m not ruling anything out at this time. But if that opportunity doesn’t present itself, I’ll be the best teacher at WCHS that I can possibly be,” he concluded.
