Paced by some hard-hitting serves from Sidney Link, Leah Martinez, Moriah Wallace and Hannah Heady along with 12 kills from senior Christian Papineau, the WCHS volleyball team posted the first-ever district victory over Union County in four sets 26-24, 25-19, 23-25, 25-18.
The Lady Trojans made school history with the victory in playoff-like atmosphere on their home court in Dixon on Tuesday.
Link led the charge completing 94 percent of her serves and record three aces, as did Wallace, Heady and Martinez. Papineau and Ashdyn Cardwell posted two service aces each.
WCHS rallied from a 14-10 deficit in the first set to earn match point on an unforced error by the Bravettes. The WC girls never trailed in the second set and could “smell” a 3-set sweep. But Union County held off the maroon-and-gold charge to keep the match alive with the 25-23 win in set three.
That set the stage for the deciding fourth set where Papineau had five kills.
Webster’s junior varsity squad set the tone for victory earlier in the evening with their first win over the season, thumping Union County 17-21, 21-16, 21-14.
After dropping the first set, the young Lady Trojans relied on some very strong net play from Hailey McKinsey, who posted two kills and five blocks, along with three blocks from Emily Ferrell.
Ferrell also had five service aces along with three from Jordn Rutledge and two by Brooke McVay. Railey Lussier, Brooklyn Drury and Leah Martinez had one ace apiece. Kristen Hearrin aided in the win with 100 percent serving accuracy.
The WCHS freshman squad fell 2-1 to the Bravettes in the night’s opener. Emily Ferrell enjoyed a strong outing with eight aces while Brianna Jones added seven. Leah Martinez contributed with three service and Danielle Payne two.
