Lady Trojans defeat Storm

By CHARLIE HUST
Webster County Lady Trojan soccer team raised its record to 8-8-1 last week with a 4-2 win over Hopkins County Central in Mortons Gap.

The victory gave the Lady Trojans the outright Pennyrile Athletic Championship title and also momentum heading into this week’s 6th District Tournament in Dixon.
Webster senior Taylor Main gave the Lady Trojans an early lead with a goal from about 35 yards out with only 8:32 off the clock. Lexie Cole got the assist on the goal.
But the Central answered the score with a goal of it’s own at the 12:01 mark to tie the match at 1-1.
Cole, Webster’s high-scoring senior, put the Lady Trojans back on top for good by breaking in front of three Lady Storm defenders and booting her team-leading 24th goal of the season off the assist from Flor Salazar. Despite Central’s 20-13 on-goal shooting advantage, WCHS never trailed the rest of the way courtesy of strong play from goal keeper Brittanie Smith.
Webster pushed its lead to 3-1 late in the match with another goal from Cole, a line-drive into the back of the net just outside of the penalty box. Kaylee Pratt was credited with the assist on the goal.
Webster sophomore Brooke Clark topped of the scoring with her first goal of the game at the 75 minute mark of the match with a nifty assist from Lindsey Grant.
Central (8-9) added it final goal of the night one minute later.
The Lady Trojans played arch-rival Union County Tuesday night in the opening round of the 6th District Tournament. The winner takes on defending district champion Henderson County in the district finals.
