Trojans Fall to Fort Campbell

By CHARLIE HUST
For the second straight week the Webster County football team allowed 49 points, this time to a very talented Fort Campbell squad Friday night at Trojan Field. It was the second consecutive district loss for Webster, which dropped to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in District 1, Class 3A play.

Fort Campbell improved to 3-5, overall and evened its record to 1-1 in district action.
The Falcons got a quick scoring strike in the game to take a 6-0 lead. A 32-yard interception for a touchdown by Isaiah Washington put FCHS on the scoreboard in the early minutes of the first stanza.
But the gritty Webster squad had a bit of ‘big play’ magic of its own as Travis Springfield scooped up a Falcon fumble and rumbled 25 yards for the touchdown for a 6-6 game midway through the first quarter.

That would be as close as WCHS could get as the Falcons reeled off 43 unanswered points for a commanding 49-6 advantage. A TD late in the first quarter made it 13-6 and then 29 more points in the second quarter stretched the Falcon advantage to 42-6 at halftime.
Webster’s Chance Cook gave Trojan fans something to cheer about late in the third quarter with a 78-yard punt return to trim the lead to 42-12. It was the first career touchdown for the WC sophomore.
FCHS added it’s final score on an 18-yard run by Christian Berry, his third of the game along with a team-leading 176 yards on 17 carries.
The Trojans scored on the final possession of the game with Peyton Bussell capping off the scoring drive with a 4-yard TD sprint.
Fort Campbell amassed 245 total yards and held the Trojans to just 72 total yards, 35 on the ground and 37 through the air. Webster aided the speedy Falcons with five interceptions.
The Trojans will have a hefty task this week taking on district-leading Paducah Tilghman at Brooks Stadium in Paducah. The Blue Tornado, ranked 10th in the latest KHSAA 3A polls, sport a 2-0 district record and are 4-5 overall, including last week’s 27-6 victory over Trigg County.
