The Lady Trojan tennis team completed its season on Monday with a strong showing in the Regional Tournament held at Ruff Park in Hopkinsville.

In singles’ play, Hanna VanWinkle opened play with a tough draw against 2014 Regional runner-up Mary Glen Powell of Hopkinsville. She lost the first set 6-love but gave Powell a good fight in the second set before falling 6-3.

WC sophomore Brooke Clark took on Lyon County’s Cate Armstrong and she advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-0 victory. In the second round, Clark squared-off against Lexi Menser of Hopkins County Central and dominated the match 6-0, 6-0. That set the stage for a tussle with the tourney’s #3 seed Kate Phelps of Caldwell County. Phelps prevailed 6-1, 6-1.

“She (Phelps) is a seasoned veteran but Brooke really gave her a run, taking several points to deuce,” WCHS head coach Mark Schalk said of Clark.

In doubles’ play, Katelyn Mattingly and Amanda Newman struggled early against Hopkins Central’s Brooke Hanor and Monica Huff. The WC duo dropped the firs set 6-4, but rebounded with a 7-5 win in the second set. But the Lady Storm tandem prevailed in the decisive third set with a 10-7 ‘super tie-breaker’ victory.

Webster’s senior duo of Cassidy Thomas and Hannah Buchanan earned a first round bye and aced Central’s Shelby Crawford and Monica Boyd 6-0, 6-0 in the second round. In the quarterfinals, the WCHS pair faced the tourney’s #2 seeded team of Kate Phelps and Kelsey Engelbright of Caldwell County.

The talented Caldwell duo claimed the first set 6-4 but Thomas and Buchanan fought back to take the second set in a tiebreaker 7-4. Phelps/Engelbright then outlasted the Lady Trojan tandem 10-8 in the super tie-breaker third set to advance to the finals.

“It was just a tremendous match, Cassidy and Hannah just played outstanding tennis. I’m very proud of them and my entire squad,” Schalk stated.

Webster County girls’ tennis team battled a strong Henderson County squad down to the wire last week before falling by one match.

WCHS received singles victories from Katie Floyd, Kaylee Duncan and Amanda Newman against the Lady Colonels last Thursday in Henderson. Newman and Katelyn Mattingly combined for a doubles winner as did WC’s Emily Johnson and Katie Floyd.

In singles’ play, Floyd earned an 8-2 win over Caitlyn Kirchoft while Newman topped Grace Billings. Duncan aced Henderson’s Julie Hancock 8-1.

After Webster’s top-seeded doubles duo of Cassidy Thomas and Hannah Buchanan dropped a hard-fought 9-7 decision, Newman and Ketelyn Mattingly combined for an 8-4 win in their match. Johnson and Floyd followed that victory with a dominating 8-love match win over Josie Rideout and Carley Davidson.
