Webster County hosts largest golf tourney in course history

Providence Municipal Golf & Recreation Center held its largest high school golf tournament in course history on Saturday as the WCHS golf teams hosted the annual Webster County Invitational.

The 13-team field, along with several individuals, enjoyed great weather and some of the finest golfers in the state, including last year’s KHSAA State Champion John Augenstein of Owensboro Catholic.

And Augenstein topped the field for medalist honors, firing a 1-under-par 71 to win the individual title.

WCHS senior Trevis Bell posted a 1-over-par 73, thanks to a rally on the final three holes. A triple-bogey on number eight hampered his chances of a tourney title, but his birdie-par-birdie finish lifted the senior to a third place finish. That score pushed the Trojans to a fourth-place finish overall. Marshall County won the team title, behind the second-place finish of D. J. Pigg (71).

The Marshalls finished with a 309 total while Owensboro Catholic was one stroke back at 310 and Henderson County was third (314) and Webster fourth (336) followed by Madisonville-North Hopkins (346).

“We’re very excited about the tourney, a Tier I level event right here at home,” noted WCHS head coach Todd Norman. “Trevis wasn’t pleased with his score but against this type of competition, we will take it. He’s battling for All-State points and right now he’s in the top 20.”
Fellow WCHS seniors Devin Morris added an 83 on the day while  Hunter Davis and Tyler Smith both finished with 90’s.
