Lady Trojans rout OHS, nipped by Lyon

by Morgan McKinley

Old Man Winter has certainly not been easy on the schedule for Webster County’s girls’ basketball team. The Lady Trojans (18-8) were still able to squeeze in two games last week, splitting against Lyon County and Owensboro Senior.

Webster is currently third in the Second Region standings, trailing Lyon by two games in the win column, and Madisonville-North Hopkins by one.

Lyon and MNHHS are the top two defensive teams in the state at 34.8 and 37.4 points per game allowed, respectively.

Karlie Kenney found something she liked about playing an afternoon game.

The freshman lit up Owensboro for 23 points, including four 3-pointers, as she led WCHS to a rout Saturday in Dixon.

Keeney dropped in two from long range in the first period, and Jessica Winders scored six of her 11 as the Lady Trojans claimed a 14-5 lead.

Webster scored 21 points in the second frame, led by Kaylee Duncan’s six and Hallie Gibson’s five. WCHS held a 35-14 halftime advantage.

Keeney scored 13 of her team’s 19 in the third quarter, and the Lady Trojans stretched their lead to 28 at 54-26.

Duncan finished the game with 10 points, and Gibson added nine.

Marissa Austin and Kerstin Braden contributed four points apiece, while Jamie Winstead chipped in three and Lexi Hinton one.

The Lady Trojans took a hard loss at the hands of Lyon County last Tuesday in Eddyville.
The Lady Lyons (20-5) showed why theirs is the number one defense in the state, as they held Webster County to its lowest scoring game of the season.

WCHS kept it close in the first period. Karlie Keeney and Hallie Gibson each dropped 3-pointers, and Kaylee Duncan added two points as the Lady Trojans trailed 11-8 headed into the second frame.

But Lyon ratcheted up the defense in the next eight minutes, holding WCHS to just three points in the stanza to take a 22-11 halftime advantage.

The Lady Trojans trimmed that deficit in the third quarter, allowing just five points by LCHS and pulling to within eight, 27-19.

Duncan scored seven of her nine points in the final frame, and Kenney added five as Webster attempted to rally. But Becca Somers scored seven of her game-high 17 points for the Lady Lyons to hold the visitors off.

Keeney paced WCHS with 12 points.

Hallie Gibson added seven points, Jessica Winders three, and Kerstin Braden two.
